We recommend the best position a parent can take to help educate their children about drug addiction is to make their position very clear about how they feel about drugs.

Parents should be able to communicate with their children naturally and it should be comfortable for the parent. For example, taken out of the Narconon booklet, Talking to Kids About Drugs – A Guidebook for Parents and Caregivers. It says: “I want to make sure you know I don’t want you using drugs. I care about you and don’t want to see you hurt.” Or, “Drugs are destructive. They have ruined many lives. I don’t want them to ruin yours.” This may seem to be ineffective for parents, or even repetitive; however, there is much more that should be done along with communicating this message.

Make it a point to explain how drugs can and will effect the goals and future endeavours of your children. Many people when they are using drugs, they are under the common misconception; if you’re numb, nothing will hurt you. This form of thinking is typically a common defence against the real problems, which are facing the drug user. Creating this picture through drug education will help your children see the negative effects of drugs more clearly. It will also create a higher interest within your children to put forth positive goals for themselves. Make sure you keep asking your children what they like to do, and start having fun doing it. This will also help them prepare for their future.

If anything, help your children understand drugs will prevent them from learning. It is very common for learning rates of drug users to be much slower than that of non-drug users. When people use drugs it will also impede their alertness, putting them in more dangerous situations. Drugs will always set a person up to get into bad spots in life, always creating more problems. Through all of this, always help your children learn and improve their abilities, and this will always help them become successful.
