Cymbalta is one of those new wonder drugs that must be, if the marketing is to be believed, a drug that we all should have, as being the way to happiness, in our middle age.
Cymbalta is one of many brand names for the SNRI antidepressant drug Duloxetine hydrochloride, that provides us with an uplifting effect. Cymbalta maintains high levels of serotonin and norepinephrine (antidepressant biochemicals) in the brain.
Unfortunately, due to adverse drug reactions, that include death by suicide, Cymbalta cannot be safely used by people under the age of 25, as an antidepressant or for pain.
However, for the rest of us, we can use Cymbalta – since 2004 in the USA, for major depression, and peripheral diabetic pain, prescription drug use that was approved in Canada in 2007.
In the same year, 2007, the US FDA went on to approve Cymbalta for generalized anxiety disorder. In 2008, Cymbalta was approved for fibromyalgia.
In 2010, the FDA further approved this Eli Lilly drug for control of musculo-skeletal pain and chronic lower backache.
The exact mechanism of this drug is poorly understood – all that is known is that it inhibits reuptake of the brain chemicals that make us feel happy and relaxed. The reasons for its analgesic effects on pain in the body, also are unknown
It would appear that Cymbalta is useful to relieve a range of painful conditions such as fibromyalgia, that would seem to be caused by chronic stress and tension held in the body.
The pain inflicted, on ourselves, by autogenic disorder, is, as many studies show,. essentially caused by stress. Autogenic disorders seem to be the way by which the body makes “complaints”, in a somatic way, about the negative lifestyle factors that it is exposed to.
Anti-depressants can be useful as “anti stressors.
Although medical science declares that the precise mechanism of this most efficacious drug is unknown, one could take an educated guess. One could form the totally, empirically based opinion that if Cymballa makes you feel good, by making you “undepressed”, then you will, as a result become physically relaxed and tension free.
A body so released from the impact of considerable mental and emotional stress, would then cease to inflict upon itself damaging physical chemical imbalance, and musculo-skeletal tension.
It would seem that the power of mental and emotional tension must be considerable if it leads on to produce actual symptoms of ill health in the body, such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, low back pain, and possibly MS.
With all due respect to the Lilly pill, – that makes a cool $3 billion a year in profits – there are far better and cheaper ways, less intrusive and side effect prone, to raise serotonin and other feel good biochemicals in the body – in a nutshell by doing, every day, a few things that make us feel happy.
It has long been said that laughter is the best medicine – but where in the world today do you get it? Perhaps only when you listen carefully and hear Eli Lilly & Co laughing all the way to the bank.
It is only in fairly recent times that people have even considered that happiness could appear before them, in the form of a pill. The way to happiness has always previously been considered as the tao or path that you follow, within a chosen lifestyle, based on honesty, moralty and ethics.
With environmental pollution contributing to stress, as do our toxic relationships, it seems to add insult to the injury to the body, when we ignore it’s signaling, and bombard it with more stress-causing substances and drugs, in a futile effort to medicate “symptoms” away, instead of dealing with the stress that is the cause of the symptoms.
Doubt has been cast upon the efficacy of Duloxetine as an effective antidepressant and analgesic – yet over $3 billion sales can’t be wrong – or can they. Many trials have been conducted to show that where antidepressants are concerned it is usually just as effective to use a placebo.
Drugs are pushed as if they are the only effective way that we can combat endemic ill health. The reality is that medicinal use of drugs is only an exacerbation of the problem. At the end of the day, only by using methods that are drug free and natural will we ever regain good health.
Substance abuse and drug use, like disease and disorder, is a symptom of stress.
