Alcoholism is an emotional, spiritual and physical dependency on alcoholic beverages.

Alcoholism does tend to run in families, which would suggest that it may be genetic. The number of drinks or drinking events it takes to become an alcoholic can vary widely from person to person. Some people become alcoholics after their first drink and others can drink casually for years before becoming an alcoholic.

There is an abundance of help out there for alcoholics and their loved ones. Many people are afraid to reach out for help because they feel it means they are weak, but just the opposite is true. People who reach out for help have a lot of courage. Others neglect getting help because they think it will reflect badly on their family. Alcoholism does not discriminate. It affects every type of family from every socio-economic status

Even though there are possibly more alcoholics in the world than drug addicts, there seems to be a stigma attached to drug addiction that has never been attached to drinking and alcohol. Quite possibly, one of the reasons that could be, is because many drugs addicts are using illegal drugs, and one tends to envision strung out rock stars or junkies lying in a ditch somewhere spaced out from getting high. Alcohol on the other hand, has been glamorized and accepted as the best way to “be social” for centuries, even though there is nothing glamorous about alcohol addiction. If you don’t believe it, ask someone who is struggling with cirrhosis of the liver and in need of a transplant just how glamorous that is.

There is no easy answer on quitting any chemical, whether it is alcohol or a drug. There are many steps involved in quitting drinking alcohol and it can be a difficult and lengthy process. The good news is: it can be done. The first step is normally detoxification. In this process, the alcohol is eliminated from the individual’s body. This is usually done in a rehabilitation center although it is not unheard of for people to detox at home. Detoxification can bring about a variety of symptoms including everything from nausea and vomiting to the DT’s.
