How to Help a Heroin Addict

The last thing you ever thought you would happen to you or someone that you love is that they would find themselves in the downward spiral of a heroin addiction.

Unfortunately, many of us, at some point or another in our lives may find that we are faced with this very thing, the evil mistress that is known as heroin addiction.   When someone we love is struggling with heroin addiction, the first thing we want to know is how we can make him or her to stop.   Unfortunately, you can’t.   An addict has to be able to recognize that they have a problem, be willing to admit it, and then actually want help.   For some addicts this comes early, and for some it never comes.

Heroin is derived from morphine, and considered by many to be one of the most addictive drugs available.

* Does this mean that you should sit back and let the person you love continue to spin out of control while you watch? Absolutely not, but it’s important to know that as great as it would be able to wave a magic wand and heal the person of their heroin addiction, it just isn’t possible, or realistic.

Heroin is derived from morphine, and considered by many to be one of the most addictive drugs available.  In addition to being highly dangerous to use, stopping with the drug cold turkey can also be just as dangerous, with withdrawal symptoms of the drug being in some cases life threatening

* Encourage your loved one or friend to get help with their addiction.

Offer them help with finding a treatment facility, and explain to them that you know they don’t want to be an addict, and are willing to do what you can to help them, as long as they are willing to help themselves.

It’s important to find a reputable care facility that can offer medical professionals that can help with to get through the withdrawal symptoms.   Some facilities use medications to help with the withdrawal symptoms, while others prefer to use a more holistic, natural drug-free approach.

* Once your loved one agrees to help, they have a long road ahead of them.

Make sure that they know they have your support and encourage other family members or loved ones (who are drug free) to offer support.  The addict needs all the encouragement and support they can get in order to overcome this addiction.    Make sure that when you offer support, you don’t give the addict cash or anything that could be sold to allow money for drugs.

It’s also imperative that once the person comes out of rehab, that they break all ties with all the friends who were addicts with.  Again, this is where encouragement is imperative for the person to remain drug free.  Spend time with the person, invite them to dinner, anything to keep them from feeling alone and tempted to use again.
