Why do people start drinking alcohol?

Even though there are possibly more alcoholics in the world than drug addicts…

There seems to be a stigma attached to drug addiction that has never been attached to drinking and alcohol.   Quite possibly, one of the reasons that could be, is because many drugs addicts are using illegal drugs, and one tends to envision strung out rock stars or junkies lying in a ditch somewhere spaced out from getting high.   Alcohol on the other hand, has been glamorized and accepted as the best way to be social for centuries, even though there is nothing glamorous about alcohol addiction.  If you don’t believe it, ask someone who is struggling with cirrhosis of the liver and in need of a transplant just how glamorous that is.

reasons why Why do people start drinking alcohol?

Socially is the only reason why people tend to start drinking.

Socially is the only reason why people tend to start drinking, and it is probably the reason that most people would give if asked why they drink alcohol, but that isn’t the only one.   There are many other reasons why people choose to drink alcohol, and those can vary depending on the personality of each individual.  Some people tend to believe that the only way they can have a good time is drinking.  Many people who are shy or who are uncomfortable in social situations say they like to have a drink to chill out and feel a little less stressed.

* Some people tend to think that alcohol is the answer to all their problems.

They find that if they are faced with a difficult situation, drinking is the best way to  scape and don’t think about the problem, that it will go away.   The reality is, drinking only compounds the problem, because not only can alcohol abuse create other problems, it can also lead to alcoholism, and the problems that you were avoiding are still there when you sober up.

* Many people, at some point or another, feel pressure by their peers in order to drink.

Some friends won’t even ask, but just hand you a drink and expect you to drink it, while others will ask and if you decline put the pressure on and make you feel no cool if you don’t drink it.  This is a difficult situation to be in, but it is best to stand your ground and just say no.  Friends will remain friends regardless, and respect you for standing your ground.

* * * As you can see, there are many reasons why a person may choose to drink, but alcohol abuse will eventually lead to alcoholism.  The best way to avoid this from happening is not to drink at all, but if you find that you or someone you love has a problem, help is just a phone call away. * * *
