How to Stop Drinking Alcohol

Your family, your friends, your boss, all have talked to you about your drinking.

You are no longer in denial.  You have to stop drinking, but how? You have already taken the first step so let’s get you started on the rest of them.

* You should probably see a physician. Alcohol can wreak havoc on the body long before it starts to show, so going to the doctors to get a physical, and having an honest conversation with him about the fact that you are an alcoholic, or heavy drinker, could greatly benefit you in the long run.  He may be able to treat anything that may have already started, such as Toxic Hepatitis.  Even as you seek to quit drinking and overcome this addiction, it is always prudent to have a physical to play it safe.

* Okay, so you have decided to stop drinking.  Get help from a professional.  Alcohol is not as easy to overcome as some might think and you could very well need to Detox from it just as you would any other substance.  Call a helpline and let the counsellor at the other end of the line know what your particular situation is so that he or she can get you into the proper treatment program.

* Get into a support group. Alcoholics Anonymous was formed because you are not the first to have a problem with drinking and it was learned long ago that people who have gone through the fire, can help someone else going through. This support system can do wonders for you so that you are able to fight cravings and ward off a relapse.  There you will feel like you have comrades in arms, which will fight right along with you to get you through the weak times without falling back into the addiction.

* Yes, there are those who can stop drinking without help but it is always wiser to proceed with caution.

The first thing that should be addressed is whether you need to have a medical professional supervise your Detox, or if you can go into a program and withdraw without medication, or do so as an outpatient with a support group in place.

Whichever route you choose, you have already taken the wonderful, yet hardest step. You have admitted the problem.  Now, let those who are experts in this area help you to stop in as safe and successful a program as possible.
