Signs of Addiction – Part 2

It is natural that as an addiction to a drug becomes more severe, there will be signs and symptoms that could be noticed by those closest to the person.

It must also be kept in mind that these signs can also be signs of something completely non-drug related. It is when there are a combination of signs present that there should be some concern. If there is a chance that someone you love is addicted, or becoming addicted, it is best to contact a drug rehab center for more information on how to proceed.

Someone who is developing an addiction will often change their habits; some more slowly than others depending on the drug. There are often mood changes which may be severe. There may be changes in behavior such as increased or decreased activity. A change in personal grooming habits may also occur. Most loved ones notice that things just aren’t “right” with the person who may be an addict. They may become involved in more auto accidents or become clumsier. Be sure the person is not taking new prescription drugs as some of these may cause similar symptoms. If it is a prescription drug, the point of addiction usually comes where they feel they cannot live without that drug. That is, assuming of course, that the drug is a narcotic or barbiturate or other mind altering drug. It is possible to become addicted to prescription medications too.

Something that becomes common in many addicts is the tendency toward violence, especially if they have not had any access to their drug of choice.

Sometimes the quickest way to rehab is through the justice system. If a loved one becomes much more private and begins to stay behind locked doors; this may be a cause for concern.

Most addicts will have a drug kit in their rooms so they can have their fix first thing when they wake up. Overall, when someone becomes addicted, many of their habits and behaviors will change. Normally it is not just one or two that change. In severe instances, the addict may seem to become a completely different person. This is because the drug or drugs are controlling his or her behavior and not good sense.

People who were once hard workers will miss work or quit their jobs and straight “A” students will begin to fail. It is a combination of symptoms that gives more certainty that there is a drug addiction.
