How to Help Someone with a Drug Addiction

When someone you love is plagued by drug addiction, it is heart wrenching.

Many times it is a son or a daughter and you would do anything to help save them from themselves and the drug addiction. While the drug addict is killing their feelings with drugs, the loved ones are left to have to deal with the pain and anguish of having a loved one with a drug addiction. The first thing you need to do is make yourself strong.

* Do not let the drug addiction draw you in. Take care of your life as you always have. You cannot spend all of your time following after the drug addict and trying to protect them. Then, you have to lay down the law. Let the addict know that certain behaviors will not be tolerated and there will be no drugs allowed in the house. Let them know that you are well aware of what is going on. Try to be positive and suggest rehab. They may fly off the handle, but suggest it anyway. Remember; do not let their addiction drag you down too.

You must be strong and have a plan of action to convince your loved one to get into rehab.

* Seek the advice of a drug counselor at a good rehab center. Intervention may be in order in your particular situation. If at any time, the addict becomes violent, call the police. It is very important to draw lines and stick to them. Letting them get away with violence is not helping. Let the individual know you care and explain that is why you are working so hard to help them.

* Without nagging, occasionally bring up the idea of rehab. If intervention is available, try that and make sure everyone sticks to the plan. Protecting and lying for the individual will not help them deal with their drug problem.

* Having a loved one with a drug addiction can be one of the hardest things in life to go through.*

When someone we love is hurting so much, we can’t help but hurt. Keep in mind, however, that eventually those drugs will kill your loved one and no one wants that to happen. You must be strong and have a plan of action to convince your loved one to get into rehab. At the same time, you must not heap guilt on yourself. The addict is making the choice to continue the drugs, not you.
