How to Help an Addict in Recovery

How to Help an Addict in Recovery

It can be very difficult to watch a loved one struggling with Detox and Recovery. There are dynamics that are already set in place which could cause someone to do more harm than good to help an addict in recovery. There are some basic things you can do; however, show the person that you care and you are there for them.

  • Be supportive of the effort. Visiting (when it is allowed) and commenting on and acknowledging the effort of the addict can go a long way.
  • Learn. The loved ones of the addict are going to have to change behavior too so now is the perfect time, particularly if the addict is an inpatient. They need to learn not only about the addiction but about themselves.
  • Participate. If a loved one is asked to participate in a therapy session, it can be a learning experience for both the addict and the loved one.
  • Encourage. Without putting pressure on the addict, it is good to point out the positive changes that will be one the addict is recovered.
  • Once home, don’t walk on eggshells. This is still your home and the addict should not be treated like a convalescent. Try to rebuild a normal life with normal activities and challenges.

A rehabilitation center will have more information and if the loved one is already in rehab, their counselor may be able to steer loved ones in the right direction.

* Family therapy is always a good idea if everyone is willing.

While the addict is receiving treatment, it is the perfect time for family members to find out more about the condition and recovery process. It may also be a good time to get into therapy themselves. Family members need to realize that they have to be/remain strong in order to help the addict. The last thing family members should do is excuse the behavior of the addict. The addict needs to own that. He needs to admit responsibility for what he did while under the influence. This is a rough time for everyone involved. Family members, most of all, can continue to love and support the addict while in recovery and beyond, without making exceptions or accommodations for his habit.

Just being there is a show of love and support and often, that means a lot to a recovering addict.
