How to Help a Cocaine Addict

Whether you call it by its name or one of its many monikers, cocaine is no joke.

Some call it Blow, Coke, Dust, Flake, or any number of other names, but the fact remains the same, this is a dangerous and highly addictive drug.

It is usually found as a white powder and can be smoked, snorted, or injected.   The short term affects of this drug can range from paranoia and hallucinations to severe depression and hostility.   The long term effects can range from respiratory failure, damage to the liver, lungs, heart, and blood vessels, all of which can ultimately lead to death.

Because the cocaine high is generally one that is short lived, many people find themselves chasing that high, which is how the addiction begins.   The cycle continues as the person continues to use, they will find they need more and more cocaine in order to feel that high.

* Overcoming cocaine addiction is one of the most difficult drugs to overcome, but it can be done.

Understand that you cannot decide that the addict will get help, but it’s something that ultimately the addict will have to decide on their own.

Because of the withdrawal process of anyone who wants to stop using cocaine, it’s best to get them into a reputable long term treatment facility, which has professionals trained to help the addict detoxify from the drugs, and then help them with getting to the source of why they started using in the first place.   Once they are able to identify why they began using they can learn tools to help them deal with those issues, and be prepared in the future if a situation arises.

Many people find that a planned Intervention with a trained professional is a great way to get an addict to face their addiction and the impact that it is having on the lives of those around them.  These always need to be approached in a calm and loving manner, and if the addict agrees to help, there should be a facility ready to take them in immediately.   Giving them any chance to rethink their decision will more than likely mean they will change their mind.

* If the addict isn’t ready to admit they have a problem or isn’t ready to get help, you can’t force them.

Explain that you love them, but make sure you don’t enable them.  Tell them that you can’t help them until they are ready to help themselves.  It’s extremely difficult to do, but otherwise you’re only enabling them and not helping.

* Help is ready when they are ready to make the choice. *
