Alcoholism in Alberta

Alcoholism, along with drug abuse in Alberta not only affects the abuser, but also friends, family and loved ones. Most people don’t think about another victim of alcoholism and drug abuse; the government. Alberta’s government spends about 40 billion dollars. Drunk driving has increased approximately 20% in Alberta. Thankfully, the courts and justice system are taking firm action. Tired on slapping repeat offenders on the wrist, judges are now imposing prison sentences along with alcohol treatment.

Like elsewhere in the world, alcohol has been such an accepted part of society in Alberta for so long that the devastation and destruction it has caused has not hit home for many people. More and more people die due to alcoholism in Alberta every year. Drinking on the job is a big problem in Alberta and steps are being taken to curb that trend.

Alcohol is a drug, much the same as methadone or oxycontin or any other mind altering drug. Because it is “legal”, most people just accept it and only notice a problem when the law becomes involved due to family disputes or car accidents. Alcoholism, like other drugs can be dealt with, it can be cured.  Alcoholism is a choice. Quitting alcohol is also a choice. It is a much tougher choice, but a choice none-the-less.

Choosing a holistic rehabilitation program is the best option. Trading one drug for another simply should not be an option. There are ways to naturally and holistically treat the mind, body and spirituality of the alcoholic. Rehabilitation for alcoholism that offers a great support system and residential treatment also helps. There is no quick fix for alcoholism. Spending a week or so in rehabilitation just isn’t as successful as spending at least 60 days beating the habit and learning new coping skills.

Alcoholism in Alberta is no laughing matter. Alcoholism is a dangerous and debilitating condition that begins with the choice to take one drink. No one plans to become an alcoholic, but the number of people who do is staggering. The best way to avoid alcoholism is never to take that first drink. If it is too late for that, and help is needed, there is no shame in seeking it. Get the help needed to overcome alcohol. Alcohol abuse destroys people, families, communities and friendships.

If a loved one is dealing with alcoholism in Alberta, don’t ignore it. Confront them, make phone calls, intervene.
